Santiago Arnés, 3-time mountain duathlon world champion

Santiago Arnés

BH Hermans team member Santiago Arnés was crowned Green Cup mountain duathlon world champion for the third time. The event was held on Sunday, November 29th, around the Arenal volcano in La Fortuna, Costa Rica. This win comes on top of the world sub-champion and Green Cup national champion titles that Arnés had already earned.

It was a hard-earned victory for Arnes in Costa Rica, who had to contend with Mexican athlete Octavio Chetto who was on his tail the whole way, less than two minutes behind, and it wasn’t until the last part of the MTB leg that Arnes managed to break away from Chetto, right on the race’s last and longest ascent.

Crossing the finish line at the Green Cup, Arnés won his third international title after his victories in Chile and Argentina, with a time of 2:22:41. Chetto, of the Mexican team Buff, finished with a time of 2:27:18 de Chetto. Third place went to another Mexican, Adolfo Wriedet, from team Vodoo, with a time of 2:45:00.

Yolanda Magallón renews her title as well
The Aragonese athlete Yolanda Magallón of the BH Bikezona team had no difficulties beating her main rival, the Mexican international triathlete Adriana Corona of the Buff Sport City team, who was very competitive for the first 10km leg foot race on the skirts of the Arenal volcano and the first part of the MTB leg, when Magallon made her move, leaving Corona behind and without much chance to catch up. Magallón’s time was 3:00:26, while Corona’s was 3:11:09.

The race took off at 8:30 in the morning with a 10km off-road mountain foot race, followed by a 27km MTB leg. The circuit ended up being even more difficult that everyone had expected, as they had to deal with the stifling morning heat in Costa Rica that added to the difficulty of the already tricky course prepared by the organisers.

The foot race was very demanding, with steep ascents on mountain paths, through pasture and over ancient lava on the skirts of the Arenal, Costa Rica’s most active volcano. This area also has lots of woods and vegetation. The MTB leg was just as spectacular, with incredible vistas of the Arenal, the perfect setting for the 5th Green Cup International Finals, where Spanish athletes were once again victorious.
