Julián Sanz during the Challenge
The ultramarathoner made it to Santiago de Compostela at 11:30 a.m. the following day, after cycling the 745 kilometers of the French Way through northern Spain in 27.5 hours. And although he wasn’t able to do it in 24 hours as he had hoped, he was able to improve his previous record of 28 hours set last year, a great accomplishment in and of itself.
For the first part of the route, Sanz kept slightly ahead of his expected time, leading him to believe that he would achieve his goal. But during the night, sleepiness and fatigue set in and kept him from fulfilling his quest in the desired time.
Knowing Sanz, in all likelihood he will try it again next year, but for the time being, he is focused on a 24-hour distance record attempt, which he has planned for May 3rd in Vitoria.
