Passion and perfection. These are the words that best define Mick Hoogwerf. A lover of sport, especially cycling.

Despite being born in the Netherlands, Mick and his wife Wilma have lived in Girona for a long time. Long enough to know every twist and turn on La Tossa de Mar road, every slope at Vallter 2000, or the Robert Gesink’s Hors Categorie where he discovered his taste for the well-known tosta tumaca jamon —Spanish cuisine in a cyclist’s café with Dutch roots.

This blend of a cosmopolitan and authentic local atmosphere, and the sense of community and the essence of cycling, is what pushed Mick to follow his heart. He traded a career spanning almost 30 years for a new challenge: to achieve the dream of making a living from his greatest passion, cycling.

The bicycle was a key part of Mick’s childhood – as it is for every child in the Netherlands. Just look at the huge bike parking areas at any train station, and the fact that the daily commute in the Netherlands revolves around pedals and two wheels.

Every July, this routine use of the bike becomes pure emotion. In the 70s and 80s, TV sets were tuned to NOS to see Joop Zoetemelk wear the yellow jersey all the way to the Champs-Elysées, and to watch Kuiper, Winnen and Theunisse triumph at Alpe d’Huez. Illustrious Dutch surnames given to many of the 21 curves on the Dutch mountain.

Passionate about sport, he has skateboarded and snowboarded all his life, although for the last few years, his focus has been exclusively on road cycling and what this stands for: speed, effort, freedom…

His dedication might not be the same as when he was 20, but his passion and effort remain intact. He now combines training with routes alongside guests at his small bike-friendly hotel near Girona and the Gavarres.

“Cycling means freedom for me, that’s why I love everything that has to do with speed, perfection and the pleasure of giving 100% of myself in everything I do”

There are many days when Mick is up before dawn, ready to start his daily route. Today, La Mota is witness to this early morning outing. But before, it was the Gavarres massif, Rocaborba or Pont de Pedra. 400 km of road a week are proof of this passion, shared with so many others. The search for perfection. The enjoyment of a hobby.

And, if we talk about competitions, Mick is in no doubt: he loves the Tour de France, but longs for those stretches of cobblestone and demanding climbs, characteristic of the classic races of his native Holland or neighbouring Belgium. Maybe that’s why when you ask him which race would define him, he doesn’t hesitate to answer: Liège-Bastogne-Liège. “The Old Lady”. A versatile, demanding race that makes you ride with everything you’ve got at all times. Over 200 kilometres of perfection and performance. The same characteristics that Mick demands of his bike, and of himself.

In this respect, he identifies with his role in the Aerolight video. The battle between the desire to follow his heart and the reality of working in a corporate world has been instrumental in leading him to where he is today.

With these influences showing him the way, Mick decided to follow his heart, and as the owner of the Equipe Guesthouse Girona, he now combines his enthusiasm for the world of cycling with his work.
