Vuelta a España 2005 | Stage 15: Cangas de Onis - Valgrande Pajares (191 km)
No one expected it. On the way down from the penultimate climb of the day! Who would have imagined it! When has a climber been seen to attack going down? And where has it been seen to do so almost 50 kilometers from the finish? Roberto Heras turned the Spanish round around —until then commanded by Denis Menchov, in the last opportunity he had left. He and Manolo Sáiz had prepared a mythical ambush. One of those that will be remembered over the years. The cyclign we remembered from the 70s and 80s. That cycling created by/for heroes. The one in which watios was just an small word who no one pays attention to and the cyclist always reacted according to his own feelings. The press and fans did not skimp on praise after having savored more than 1 hour of real cycling. Manolo Sáiz had mobilized his "troops" from the very first kilometer. The script for this stage was already written the night before. Big names such as Beloki or Vicioso entered the breakway of the day, leaving their leader alone and helpless. A strategy that raised the eyebrows of more than one cycling expert. The group began the descent of Alto de la Colladiella. Roberto looked to his side and saw something in Menchov's eyes. The Russian was in crisis. The cards were dealt and Heras had been holding his ace for those last 50 kilometers — an ace the Russian never believed could come. And on those wet Asturian roads the festival began. Beloki, Vicioso, Scarponi ... a great help for Roberto Heras. The golden jersey was closer than ever. Menchov arrived more than 5 minutes behind. The fourth Vuelta a España for Roberto was accomplished. A feat that few will forget. One more legend that the Asturian ports will "tell" the fans of the future.
